Welcome students, parents and family members, community members, and teachers/friends abroad. This should be an exciting year at Craftsbury Academy for the sciences, in and out of the classroom. I was recently thinking about some of the earliest learning experiences I had as a child within the sciences.I was fortunate to visit and learn in environments like Shelburne Farms, where facts were accompanied by visceral and visual learning experiences, learned skills, and a culture that made knowledge seem relevant and authentic. Whether shaking cream in a mason jar to make butter, watching the morning chicken parade (with dozens of different species!), or taking a nature walk with friends and family, these experiences were inherently important to the community, the culture, and the sciences of Vermont. My goal for this year is not only develop, test, and evalaute exciting scientific research and laboratories throughout the sciences at Craftsbury, but to also include the surrounding community and culture into our classroom. While space sciences might seem like a distant, far-away subject, or physics might appear to be entirely mathematical and calculated, bringing other elements of Craftsbury, Vermont, and our world into the classroom will make our learning relevant, authentic, and purposeful. I want each of our scientists to approach science with curiosity, creativity, and a critical mind. I will keep this blog up-to-date as often as possible with photos, videos, discussions, projects and more within the Craftsbury classroom. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and ideas (if you have any!). -Ethan
